Strange, beautiful, and frightening art fascinates me. My relationship with reenactors of historical periods began when I was twenty-five years old. Then there are caves, lakes, underwater caves, and things that go bump in the undergrowth. Where do these disparate factors lead? Into worlds of wonder and danger.
I’m currently writing paranormal mysteries, set in a town called Loon Lake. Comedy and horror tropes cast their shadows against the cave wall, twisting and flicking by the bonfire light. There are hidden baddies, magic and surprises, and plucky heroines who find out whodunnit.
Is this why I’m building an imaginary, family museum in a manor house tucked into the woods? Or maybe it’s because of the gorgeous AI image capabilities I’ve had since summer. Either way, it’s a harmless compulsion, if you don’t count the werewolves.
Here are some of the images that haven’t made it into the museum. Do you see how remarkably well-preserved they are? If the magic wasn’t real, I’d swear the items were fakes.
The Loon Lake Museum of Arcane Victoriana is inviting a limited number of charter members who will receive free access to new exhibits as they are cataloged. For more information, please consult: maajawentz.com
That’s it for this Sunday’s weekly work. I’ve spent the past two weekends working too many hours on a new story project that won’t be for sale (anywhere) but will appear in a free paranormal mystery giveaway.
The story will go for proofreading this week. The selection will be made public in monthly rounds of 8-10 stories by different authors between June 2023 and May 2024. I’m looking forward to reading stories by the other contributors, many of whom are bestselling authors or popular indies.
Have a creative week!
